This scene is just a couple blocks away from my fourth Aunt’s house in Nanzhuang.
We are sticky and swimming in humidity after an uphill hike in the lush broadleaf forest, enjoying refreshing drinks from my cousins’ cafe. The very minute we walk out of the cafe, we are sweating again, bathed in the rainforest’s wet embrace. We are pulling our arms away from our sides to minimize skin contact. In the quiet walk home, the sharp, rattling songs of cicadas flood our ears and make my heart beat to the memory of the forest; in the moment, all is well.
