“Summer in Japan” is based on a film photo by Celestial Lighting on Reddit. I wanted to capture the blown-out quality of her photo, and hold its original medium (as a film photo) at the forefront of the discussion. When I take reference photos on my film camera, I almost treat each image like a painting. In my limited number of shots, what do I want the person on the receiving end to see? Where do I crop the edges? How close or far should I be, to tell the story I want to tell?
This piece is an exploration of my familiar film-photo-to-painting-process while doubling as an appreciation for a beautiful photo.
